The lifespan of a car seat depends on the group it falls under. Currently, there are six groups that encompass all car seats:
1. Group 0+:
• From birth to 15 months.
• Weight: up to 13 kg.
2. Group 0+/1:
• From birth up to 18 kg (approximately 4 years).
3. Group 1:
• For children weighing 9 kg (approximately 9 months) to 18 kg (approximately 4 years).
4. Group 1/2/3:
• For children weighing 9 kg (approximately 9 months) to 36 kg or 135 cm in height (approximately 11-12 years).
5. Group 2/3:
• For children weighing 18 kg (approximately 7 years) to 36 kg or 135 cm in height (approximately 11-12 years).
6. Group 0+/1/2/3:
• From birth to 36 kg or 135 cm in height (approximately 11-12 years).
While some seats last longer than others, this doesn’t mean that a Group 0+ car seat is less safe than a Group 0+/1 seat because it has a shorter lifespan. Instead, manufacturers provide a recommended service life (see below) for each car seat model.
